Which of the following measurements is used to measure and compare the potency of inhalational anesthetic agents?

a. MAC
b. MIC
c. CDC
d. FDA

a. The potency of an inhalational anesthetic is expressed as the inspired concentration of the inhaled anesthetic required to induce surgical anesthesia in 50% of patients. This is referred to as the minimal alveolar concentration (MAC ). MAC is used to measure and compare the potency of inhalational anesthetic agents. For example, agents with MACs greater than 1 are less potent than agents with an MAC of less than 1 . Agents with low MACs are used in combination with nitrous oxide, with a MAC of > 100, to reduce the concentration of each resulting in less adverse side effects.
