Explain the role of parents and peers in preventing adolescent drug abuse.

What will be an ideal response?

Parents play an important role in preventing adolescent drug abuse. Positive relationships with parents and others can reduce adolescents' drug use. Researchers have found that parental monitoring is linked with a lower incidence of drug use. A recent research review concluded that the more frequently adolescents ate dinner with their family, the less likely they were to have substance abuse problems. And a recent study revealed that negative interactions with parents were linked to increased adolescent drinking and smoking, while positive identification with parents was related to declines in use of these substances. Another study revealed that having friends in their school's social network and having fewer friends who use substances were related to a lower level of substance use by middle school students.
