What are leptin and grehlin and how do they influence appetite and weight?
What will be an ideal response?
Leptin is a hormone that is produced by fat cells. It acts to reduce intake of food. An
increase in body fat leads to an increase in leptin which leads in turn to a decrease in food
intake. However, overweight people are resistant to the effects of leptin. Grehlin is a
hormone produced by the stomach. It is a powerful appetite stimulator. It rises before
meals and decreases after eating. If there is a disturbance in its normal process, this can
lead to overeating.
