Moor mud is a type of peat that is also known as "black mud," because of its appearance. It is the mineral-rich sedimentation that is deposited at the bottom of lakes and rivers fed by both hot springs and cool springs. The hot springs contribute volcanic ash to the mixture of plant material settling to the bottom of the water. The lakes from which moor mud is taken maintain a temperature around 86°F, but the combination of hot and cool water creates a great deal of circulation in the lake. This enhances the decomposition of organic material; layers and layers build up over time.
