Encouraging physical exercise is an inexpensive and effective way to manage chronic disease. Support this claim by describing how Dennis, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and Malik, who is HIV+, might benefit from physical exercise. Be sure to mention the type and amount of exercise, where applicable as well as the specific benefits Dennis and Malik might expect.
What will be an ideal response?
Exercise may help Dennis retain mobility for a longer period and improve the quality of his life. Park and colleagues (2013) found that people with Parkinson’s disease who participate in an exercise program--involving cardiovascular as well as resistance training--show lower levels of depression than those who did not participate. Rafferty and colleagues (2017) reported that people with Parkinson’s disease who exercise for 150 min a week show slower declines in quality of life and mobility over 2 years compared to people who do not exercise or exercise less frequently.
Malik may slowly improve the functioning of his immune system and slow the progression of his infection through regular aerobic exercise (LaPerriere and colleagues, 1990; Solomon, 1991). In addition, another study of men who were HIV+ found that engaging in either an aerobic exercise or resistance weight-training intervention was associated with increases in positive well-being and decreases in psychological distress.
