A double top plate is commonly used in wood light-frame wall assemblies. What is the primary reason for doubling the top plate, i.e., why not use a single top plate?

What will be an ideal response?

A double top plate functions as a beam supported on studs, which allows offsetting the floor joists or rafters from the studs below. A single top plate is inadequate as a beam, requiring that the load from joists or rafters must go straight into the studs?called in-line framing.
