At a minimum, answers should define
the two types of risk factors. Static risk factors are difficult to change. Examples of static
risk factors will vary across students but might include gender, past history of substance
use/abuse, and so on. Dynamic risk factors are characteristics that can be changed
more easily. Examples might include parenting quality, adolescent skills deficit, and
other current problem areas. These two types of risk factors are important in that
effective intervention strategies will focus on dynamic risk factors because they are
more easily changed.
