Discuss why peak load power is more expensive.
What will be an ideal response?
To understand why peak load power is more expensive, imagine a generating facility with four turbines turning
four generators. Each generator requires the same amount of input energy to produce electricity, but all four
generators do not operate continuously. All four generators cost equally as much to build, install and operate
regardless how many hours per day they are used. The generators that operate for less than 24 hours each day will
consume less fuel than the generator supplying base load power, but nearly all of the other costs associated with
power generation will be about equal. The peak load generator must be on line and ready to produce at any time
when demand requires it, but its cost of operation must be paid for by the few hours of power that it actually
generates.
