She asks if any options are available to her at this point. How will you answer?
What will be an ideal response?
Emergency contraception (EC) is the only thing that can be used after unprotected intercourse to
prevent pregnancy. EC involves regular contraceptives used in a different way to prevent pregnancy
after intercourse. Most EC needs to be used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected intercourse; the
exception is Ella, which can be used up to 5 days later. The sooner the treatment is begun, the more
effective it is. However, no EC is 100% effective, so it is important that a woman who uses an EC
return for a pregnancy test if she does not have a normal period in the next 2 weeks.
