Compare and contrast the constructs of id, ego, and superego.

What will be an ideal response?

The id is completely unconscious and contains the instinctual drives of libido and aggression. The ego is both conscious and unconscious. It is responsible for maintaining psychological self-regulations (homeostasis) and adaptation to the environment. The ego performs the mental functions of perception, memory, representation, and executive. The unconscious portion of ego function consists of defenses such as repression, which keep the id in check. The superego is also partly conscious and partly unconscious. It includes both the ego ideal (the moral compass) and the capacity to generate guilt and other psychological punishments.
