Explain what ego defense mechanisms are. Why are they hard to prove?

What will be an ideal response?

The concept of ego defense mechanisms stems from ego psychology. These mechanisms are unconscious, and they serve to protect the ego by keeping repressed ideas away from the conscious. Anna Freud believed that these mechanisms could be identified through talk therapy. However, since these mechanisms are unconscious and only accessible indirectly, it is hard to find any scientific evidence for their existence.
