Relational permanency is defined as reaching beyond the physical placement and legal outcomes for a child to encompass a lifetime of relationships belonging and sense of identity. It provides lifelong connections. Legal permanency requires children in foster care have safe and permanent homes through reunification, adoption of guardianship within required federal timeframes. Reunification should occur within 12 months of removal and adoption within 24 months.
