Summarize the 1972 Branzburg v. Hayes decision.

What will be an ideal response?

In this case, a reporter named Paul Branzburg working for the Louisville Courier-Journal saw people making and using hashish while reporting on a story about drug use. He and two other journalists were subpoenaed and ordered to name their sources. The court ruled 5–4 that these journalists who had been subpoenaed in separate cases did not have reporter’s privilege. However, the court did establish that this decision was limited to the facts of these specific cases. As a result, subsequent cases could provide cause to prevent a reporter from testifying.
