Which system would be best modeled by an ideal solution? Explain your answer for full credit.

(i) ethane + n-decane
(ii) water + hydrogen fluoride
(iii) benzene + toluene

Benzene and toluene (iii) would be best modeled by an ideal solution of the three choices given. Both water and hydrogen fluoride experience significant dipole moments, which results large intermolecular interactions. Although ethane and n-decane are both hydrocarbons with little to no dipole moments, they are not as similar in molecular weight and size and benzene and toluene. Benzene and toluene are very similar to each other, both in terms of steric factors and in terms of the functional groups that make up the compounds.
