Explain how the mosque'and the sense of community that it inspired'played a central role in the spread of Islam.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
- In Medina, Muhammad built a house to serve as a community gathering place, where people could meet and pray on Fridays. This served as the model for masjids or mosques, a "place of prostration."
- Later mosques continued to reference this site and the direction that Muhammad had directed prayer, through a small niche called the qibla that signals the direction for daily prayer.
- The mosque would come to serve as a way to unite the community though the madrasa, or teaching college, that was attached.
- The mosque served the community, not just through the madrasa, but also by providing a place for all participants (laypeople and leaders) as a community meetinghouse, courthouse, council chamber, and military complex. This sense of community inspired the expansion of Islam.
