What is the difference between the inflammatory and immune responses seen during the periodontal disease process?
What will be an ideal response?
Initiation of the inflammatory system is the initial reaction of the host (body) to an antigen (bacterial pathogen). The neutrophils and macrophages come to the site of infection (gingival connective tissue) to kill the bacteria by phagocytosis. This is a nonspecific protective mechanism. If this fails, then the specific protective mechanism becomes activated. This involves the immune system (humoral immunity) and the lymphocytes.
