One's unique genotype is a contributing factor to the phenotype. Present three patterns of
genetic influence. Provide an example of each.
What will be an ideal response?
1. dominance pattern – if transmitted by at least one parent , determines trait – many examples. These
are listed on page 59 freckles, curly hair, nearsightedness, Types A and B blood.
2. recessive pattern – only if transmitted from both parents will it determine trait; numerous examples
on page 59; flat feet, red and blonde hair, Type O blood.
3. polygenic – many genes are involved; combination of transmitted genes result in trait; examples on
page 59; height; eye color; personality; most psychological traits.
4. genomic imprinting – tagging genetic information as transmitted from mother or father, may be
age-related; certain kinds of cancer, heart defects, Type II diabetes.
5. mitochondrial inheritance genetic information transmitted only from mother from fluid that
surrounds ova before fertilization; blindness.
6. multi-factorial interaction of genetic information and environment; height influenced by poverty;
most psychological trait.
