A central idea should be audience-centered, it should cover a single topic, and it should be a complete declarative sentence. It should use direct, specific language. The central idea focuses on the content of the speech and makes a definitive point about the topic. An example of a central idea is: Foreign-language education should begin in the elementary grades.
