You are a qualitative researcher studying the social world of undergraduate students on a college campus. You have been observing a freshman seminar for 8 months. During these 8 months, you notice that most students believe that the tests are extremely hard and unreasonable. Discuss one ethnographic analysis of this observation and one ethnomethodological analysis of this observation.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Ethnographic interpretations would consider the difficulty of the class as truth. This reflects how ethnographic analyses are naturalistic and reports tend to "tell it how it is" as the participants see it. Ethnomethodological interpretations should discuss how these observations are grounded in the views of the students and may not necessarily be reflective of the true difficulty of the class or professor. Perhaps this could relate to the fact that these students are new to college and not familiar with the norms of college classes.
