There are several types of programs that could be included. Educational program help inmates without a GED or high school diploma and target improving literacy and preparing inmates to take the GED. Vocational training programs are to improve inmates' skills in trades such as carpentry, electronics, welding, office equipment and word processing, food services, or horticulture and landscaping. Substance abuse programs are critical activities within prisons because such a high proportion of inmates have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. There is outpatient counseling, but residential treatment is the most intensive program, where inmates live together in a housing unit entirely focused on a substance abuse milieu. Mental health treatment programs are very important in prisons as a high percentage of inmates have mental health problems. In addition to programs in prisons, there are many prisons specifically designed for and have an operational mission to provide mental health programming for inmates. Inmates can be assigned to work while in prison, and prisons try to create a work environment that is similar to that in the free-world, and inmates develop skills such as working for a supervisor, understanding quality performance or production of a quality product, and learning to work cooperatively with coworkers. In addition, prisons also include religious programming, recreation, and other leisure time activities.
