Relationships form or evolve based on how a follower assumes roles, how leader acts or responds toward the follower, and in the “chemistry” that occurs between the two, and are based on exchanges that take place. There are two types of exchanges: tangible and intangible. Tangible exchanges are economic- or productivity-based, such as salary for performance, or the situation where an employee is left alone if he/she is performing. Intangible exchanges pertain to things like friendship, mutual responsibility, loyalty and trust.
