How is the crime of assault defined, and what are the various kinds of assault?

What will be an ideal response?

The NCVS defines an aggravated assault as an attack or attempted attack with a weapon, regardless of whether or not an injury occurred, and attack without a weapon when serious injury results. Weaponless attacks not involving serious injury are classified as simple assaults. Stranger assaults are those in which the victim and offender do not know each other, while acquaintance assaults are committed by a friend or relative of the victim.

The majority of assaults involve victims and offenders who are known to each other, often in a familial or intimate relationship. Intimate partner assault refers to assaultive behavior taking place between individuals involved in an intimate relationship. The overwhelming majority of victims in heterosexual relationships are women, although men may also be the victims of violence at the hands of their wives. Intimate partner assault also occurs among same-sex couples.
