List and explain at least six strategies that will help to prevent rape.
What will be an ideal response?
Strategies for preventing rape fall into three categories: (1) avoiding situations in which there is a high risk of rape; (2) if the first strategy has failed, knowing self-defense techniques in case a rape attempt is made; and (3) changing attitudes that contribute to rape.
Certain strategies that can be used to prevent rape are:
Setting sexual limits: No one has the right to force you to do something with your body that you don't want to do.
Deciding early if you would like to have intercourse: The sooner you communicate your intentions firmly and clearly, the easier it will be for your partner to understand and accept your decision.
Refraining from giving mixed messages: Say yes when you mean yes and no when you mean no.
Refraining from doing anything you do not want to do just to avoid a scene or unpleasantness: Do not be raped just because you are too polite or because you are worried about hurting your date's feelings. If things get out of hand, be loud in protesting.
Being aware that alcohol and drugs are often related to date rape: They compromise your ability to make responsible decisions.
Trusting your gut-level feelings: If the situation feels risky to you, trust your feelings. Leave the situation or confront the person immediately.
Applying self-defense strategies, if the first set of strategies fail: Always remember that the goal is to get away from the attacker and run for help.
