Personal groups—predominantly provide members with personal support, affection, safety, solidarity, and socialization. Examples include family and friends; social groups such as church, scouts, shared interests, fraternities, etc.; and therapeutic groups such as support groups (grief recovery, addiction, illness).
Public groups—designed to support and help others or engage in public disclosure. Examples are civic groups, charity organizations, and community efforts.
Professional—offers members the ability to increase their knowledge and to complete a task in a professional setting. Learning and work groups are included in this cluster. Learning groups are formed to improve members' knowledge in some fashion, such as student project groups, study groups, and skills workshops. Work groups are more formal and are created to work on a specific task, such as jury duty, workplace group projects, or campus student government.)
