Describe prokaryotic cells and discuss the role they played in early Earth. What will be an ideal response?
A prokaryotic cell lacks a nucleus and organelles such as mitochondria and plastids. Bacteria
and archaea are examples of prokaryotic cells. The early photosynthetic organisms, including
cyanobacteria, were prokaryotic. They played an important role in the change in the
atmosphere from oxygen-poor to oxygen-rich. Mound-like stromatolites are the result of
captured sedimentary particles by the filaments of these prokaryotic bacteria.
