Define "chain of custody" and explain why it is so important that it be maintained

What will be an ideal response?

• Chain of custody refers to the sequential documentation of evidence that shows the seizure, custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposition of evidence. Evidence is used in court to convict persons of crimes and therefore it must be handled in a thoroughly careful manner to avoid possible allegations of tampering, contamination, or misconduct, which can compromise the case. The idea behind recording the chain of custody is to establish that the evidence identified is in fact related to the crime under investigation, as opposed to it being, for example, planted to make a person appear guilty.
