Blood has a very narrow normal pH range but urine has a very broad normal pH range. What does that indicate about the physiology of pH?
Homeostasis requires that the pH of body fluids be maintained almost constant to avoid disruptions of healthy function. To accomplish this, the urinary system eliminates or retains hydrogen ion as needed. These actions cause the pH of urine to vary widely, depending on whether there is too much or not enough hydrogen ion in the body.
