If a paralegal works in litigation, why is it important that the paralegal understand the court systems?
What will be an ideal response?
A litigation paralegal must have a thorough understanding of the court system to perform his or her job. A paralegal needs to know where to file—state court or federal court? And then in what location? Litigation matters must be handled in the court that has subject matter jurisdiction over the dispute, personal jurisdiction over the parties, and venue. Matters can be dismissed if not properly filed, making the lawyer and paralegal look incompetent and costing the client in time and fees.
