Outline and explain key features of the three interpretations of the establishment clause.

What will be an ideal response?

The establishment clause focuses on the relationship between church and state, and argues that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Originally designed to ensure that no national religion would be created, over time the establishment clause has generated three separate interpretations of its meaning. The first, separationism, argues for a strict separation of state and church. The second, neutrality or the preferential treatment standard, permits state support as long as it is applied equally to all groups. The third, accommodationism, also advocates support, provided this support does not rise to official recognition.
