Differentiate the purposes of preinstruction, formative, and summative assessment.

What will be an ideal response?

The purpose of preinstruction assessment is to identify reasonable expectations and the most appropriate starting place for instruction. Formative assessment occurs during instruction for the purpose of helping teachers set teaching at a level that is challenging for students and to help teachers detect which students need individual attention. Summative assessment occurs after instruction and provides information about how well students have mastered the material, whether they are ready for the next unit, how instruction should be adapted, and how information about student progress should be reported to students and parents.
