The writer should ask himself or herself, "What exactly am I trying to accomplish?" And "How will I achieve it?" These are two of the most important questions an effective writer asks. Sound and effective writing is a matter of purpose and strategy, not just topic, word count, and sentence structure. A clear purpose is essential. The textbook's advice is not to write something if you do not know why you are writing it. The textbook goes on to advice that when you do know why, do not stop there. Make sure your audience knows too. When an author fails to communicate her or his thesis or goal, the audience is left to wonder "What's the point?" The audience is likely to tune out even if they care about the topic. They simply will not want to hear about it from that author. Before producing words on the computer screen, effective writers clearly define the goal or purpose of their written communication and they think carefully about their strategy for achieving that goal. Imagine yourself creating a battle plan. "My goal is to persuade this audience of the truth of this claim. To achieve this goal I must do this, this, and this. And in accord with rules of engagement I will use sound and well-documented arguments." The overall strategy for leading the audience to believe that a claim is true and to act on the truth of that claim is communicating worthy arguments.
