Describe the characteristics of clients who are said to be in the precontemplation and contemplation stages of change

Individuals with limited expectations for success often appear to lack motivation. As a consequence, social workers must often attempt to increase motivation by helping clients discover that their actions can be effective in reaching their goals (Gold, 1990). Motivation can be seen in terms of stages of change. In some cases, clients are said to be in the precontemplation stage: they have not yet considered a problem that has been perceived by others (Di Clemente & Prochaska, 1998). Frequently, clients are in the contemplation stage: they are aware of the issue but are not fully aware of their options, the benefits of changing, and the consequences for not doing so (Di Clemente & Prochaska, 1998). Social workers, therefore, must be able to tap into client motivation and assist those individuals who readily acknowledge a problem but are reluctant to expend the required effort or bear the discomfort involved in effecting essential change.
