How could private security officers be utilized better for crime control?

What will be an ideal response?

Sworn police officers historically have not respected those working in private security, and they haven't been very good at hiding those feelings. A main reason for this distrust is the differences in job requirements and training. Security officers don't get polygraphed and their training is minimal. However, with community policing philosophies and with budget shrinkage, police departments have been forced to realize all the extra resources that surround them. One major resource is the security industry. Some agencies are inviting security officers to train with them. This way they can tap into this great resource and have improved talent and relationships. If security officers developed a sixth sense for the big picture of crime and not just for the specific businesses they check or patrol, they will likely see more suspicious activity and deter more crime in the city as a whole.
