The African-led Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a dynamic partnership working across the continent to help millions of small-scale farmers and their families lift themselves out of poverty and hunger. Many rural farmers in Africa have for centuries practiced subsistence agriculture. Subsistence farmers still have small land areas and raise enough food for their families. These farms may grow a diversity of crops and have a few livestock. They lack modern inputs and are labor intensive. Subsistence agriculture is often still the best approach to using fragile land that has marginal soil and rainfall for crop production. Conversion of these lands to large-scale industrialized agriculture often results in failure.
AGRA programs develop practical solutions to dramatically boost farm productivity and incomes while safeguarding the environment, culture, and biodiversity. Seeds, soil health, water to markets, and agricultural education are emphasized. The Alliance was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2006 . The goal is that within 10 to 20 years, farmers will double or even triple their yields. That will allow them to generate additional income by selling their surpluses at local and regional markets. This income will help end the hunger and poverty of farmers and their families across Africa.
