- As the title suggests, the speaker is the wife. In the first few sentences we learn that at first she found her husband to be gentle and loving, a wonderful husband and father (“anybody who saw him with the children would have known that there wasn’t any bad in him, not one mean bone”), but that he underwent some sort of terrible transformation, something so horrible that even now she finds it almost impossible to believe.
