Tube counters, when two tubes are used, measure the time the front axle hits the
first tube, and then the time the same axle hits the second tube. Using the time
difference between the two tubes, and a known distance (length) between them,
the speed can be computed. The number of “front axles” is used to count vehicles.
Once the speed is known, the time between successive axles at the first tube can
be used to compute the distance between each of those axles, and the vehicle type
or classification can be estimated.
