With examples where applicable, describe each of the following forms of microaggression: microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation.

What will be an ideal response?

Microassault is a deliberate, hurtful, direct verbal or nonverbal purposeful attack on a person of color that is meant to hurt the person to whom the insult is directed. Examples include name-calling, avoidant behavior, and purposeful discriminatory actions. Microinsult involves rude and insensitive communications and subtle snubs that are demeaning to minorities’ heritage or identity. An example is saying to a student of color who got into an Ivy League university, “How did you get in?” Microinvalidation consists of communications that invalidate through exclusion, negation, and nullification, the cultural realties and experiences of a person of color. An example would be when a person of color believes she or he was passed over for promotion based on race or ethnicity and is told that he or she is playing the “race card.” Poignant to microinvalidation is the offender’s privilege to perceive such an act as harmless or with insignificant harm. The minority group recipient is often portrayed as being too sensitive or as needing to “get over it”, in essence, stop whining.
