What is ECT? How does it seem to work? What are its shortcomings and advantages?
What will be an ideal response?
* Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a biomedical treatment in which an electric current is passed through the brain to induce a seizure and is most often used to treat depression, especially when there is a great risk of suicide.
* It is unknown why ECT is effective but it has been suggested that it increases neurotransmitter levels in the brain.
* A number of previously reported side effects of ECT, such as broken bones, have been eliminated; however, some patients experience confusion and memory impairment for about an hour.
* Unilateral administration of ECT appears to reduce these impairments, but there is some concern that it is not as effective as bilateral administration.
