With reference to the diversion of water from the Colorado River, what is meant by the statement, "We are truly 'replumbing the planet' "?
What will be an ideal response?
In areas near surface water, people have made use of rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds by moving water from these sources to farm fields and houses. People have been moving water from where it is to where it isn't for thousands of years; archaeological evidence shows that many ancient civilizations depended on complex irrigation systems. For example, nearly every drop of the Colorado River's water is diverted and used. Early on in its course, some water is piped through a mountain tunnel across the Continental Divide and down the Rockies' eastern slope to supply the city of Denver. More is removed for Las Vegas and other cities and for farmland as it proceeds downriver. When it reaches Parker Dam on the California-Arizona line, large amounts are diverted into the Colorado River Aqueduct, which brings water to millions in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas in a huge open-air canal. From Parker Dam, Arizona also draws water, moving it in its own large canals of the Central Arizona Project. Further south at Imperial Dam, the largest amount of water is diverted into the Coachella and All-American Canals, destined for agriculture, primarily in the Imperial Valley. More large-scale diversion projects are in store. One of the biggest plans consists of an aqueduct to bring water from the Yangtze River in southern China to the Yellow River in northern China, where the arid climate and population pressure have caused the river to dry up in many places. With such massive projects that transfer water between major watersheds, we are truly "replumbing the planet."
