Describe different methodological approaches in terms of specifying connections between
parental emotional functioning and child adjustment.
What will be an ideal response?
There are several approaches to studying such connections. Some researchers simply
monitor the child's behavior in response to the spontaneous emotional expressions of
parents. For example, one could examine how a child responds to their parent when
they become happy or upset during a problem-solving task. Alternatively, some
researchers actually coach parents to display certain types of emotions, for example, the
researcher may train the parent to "act depressed" during interactions with their child.
Another approach is to obtain a sample of parents who are not "acting" a particular
emotional expression, for example, some researchers examine how children interact
with mothers who are clinically depressed. A final approach is to assess the general
emotional environment provided to the child by the parent. For example, the Family
Expressiveness Questionnaire assesses the parent's emotional expressiveness in the
family environment.
