As described in Funder (2019), recently a group of researchers raised concerns about the use of so-called WEIRD participants in the majority of psychological studies. Who are WEIRD participants? Why is this issue a potential concern to psychological researchers (e.g., do WEIRD participants hurt reliability)?
What will be an ideal response?
WEIRD participants refers to participants who are Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic. These participants can be bad because they tend to be very alike and can skew data. This is especially difficult if a researcher is wanting to study cross-culturally, or needs a diverse group of participants. The results of a study with WEIRD participants may not offer very reliable results across several participants, because they simply cannot generalize to everybody in the population.
