(a) Describe, in detail, five attributes of a profession. (b) Why is it important that infant and toddler care teachers and early interventionists be considered professionals?

What will be an ideal response?

(a) Discuss five of the following
• Specialized knowledge
• Agreed-upon principles and ethics
• Knowledge that is based on the practical rather than the academic (e.g., the precedents in law versus those in philosophy)
• Theoretical knowledge that is not known to lay person
• Membership in professional associations or in societies that publish journals, give conferences, and promote continuing education
• Prolonged specialized training required by all professions
• "Standards of Practice" are adopted by a profession
• A code of ethics is adopted and shared by a profession as the client [the children] is in a "lower power' position
• Work is performed with autonomous practice. Members of a profession work with some autonomy with respect to the client (e.g., they do not dictate to the client [the children and families]).
• An altruistic mission or vision. A profession sees itself as altruistic, that is, doing work that is essential to society. Professionals identify their goals with the good of humanity. This altruism can mean working longer hours on occasion and inhibits professionals from slipping into customer/sales language. (Shoemaker, 2000, p. 197 )

(b) When infant and toddler teachers are considered professionals then there will be increased quality of programs because of requirements for training, standards, and a code of ethics. The work of infant and toddler teachers is more likely to gain respect if teachers are considered professionals.
