As a country, the United States is a very large consumer of energy. Are there any actions that we as individuals can take to reduce the consumption of energy in the United States?

What will be an ideal response?

Anything that uses fuel or energy from an external source (so anything not
powered by a human) requires that energy be created. That energy creation can add
to greenhouse gases and pollution and makes the United States more dependent on
foreign oil. The following steps help reduce personal consumption:
• Unplug any appliance not in regular use (such as cell phone chargers, TVs, audio
systems). Such systems use energy even in standby mode.
• Set your computer to hibernate after 15 minutes, and turn the computer off when it
isn’t going to be used for an hour or more.
• Set the thermostat in your house to 68 degrees during the day, and 55 degrees at
night during the winter. In the summer, set the thermostat to 78 degrees. Reduce
the temperature on the water heater thermostat.
• Wash cloths in cold water when possible.
• Turn off lights.
• Install compact fl uorescent (CF) bulbs instead of regular fi lament lamps (big energy
savings).
• Install low-fl ow shower heads
• Seal doors and windows so they have no draft.
