List and explain one guideline suggested in your text for resolving conflict.
What will be an ideal response?
Examples may include the following: (a) recognize that conflict can be resolved rationally. This includes stepping away from the situation to gain a better perspective and gaining control of one’s emotions in order to approach the conflict in a more rational fashion; (b) agree about how to define the conflict: this guideline suggests the use of “I” words rather than “you” words or blaming language. The parties agree on the cause of the conflict and what benefits the appropriate solution should offer; (c) exchange perceptions--describe, express, specify, and note behavioral consequences--each party offers a potential solution to show willingness to cooperate; (d) assess alternative solutions: a solution is chosen that works best for both parties and to which both parties can adhere; (e) implement and evaluate the selected solution: the chosen solution is tested to see if it works. It is evaluated and, if it does not work, a different solution is selected.
