What role did the polis play in the lives of individual Greeks?
What will be an ideal response?
The polis was more than just a place where one lived; it also defined the identity of all who were in the polis. To be considered a citizen, for example, certain criteria had to be met, including being born in the polis to free parents, meaning that foreigners and slaves could not be considered citizens. A male citizen over the age of thirty (usually) had the right to participate in government if he met the criteria accorded by class, location, and family. The polis determined one's legal rights and rights of recourse. Civic pride was an expected part of citizenship. Exile from the polis was considered one of the worst things that could happen to a citizen: he could not have contact with anyone, and he was stripped of the rights and protection of the polis. Ostracism was developed as a means to exile a politician for a period of ten years for becoming unpopular.
