An organization can expand into new products by extending the use of the current brand through a brand extension strategy. There is a potential problem with brand extension if the new product captures sales from existing products the firm sells (cannibalization). Brand revitalization or rebranding is a strategy where a firm tries to recapture brand equity it has lost through a campaign of rebuilding trust with its customer base. When two or more companies sell a single product where they try to capitalize on the brand equity of each company, this is the co-branding strategy. Companies can also develop private label or store brands that are developed and sold only be a specific retailer.
