Your patient is 9 months pregnant and is anxious to deliver her baby. Using the Doppler, you best hear the fetal heart tones above her umbilicus and note that the rate is 150 . These findings may indicate
a. a breech presentation. c. immaturity of the fetal nervous system.
b. fetal distress. d. possible heart block.
A
If fetal heart tones (FHT) are best heard above the umbilicus, one should suspect a breech presentation or placenta previa. A fetal heart rate of 150 is normal (110–160 is normal). Fetal distress is suggested by bradycardia (below 110 bpm). A fetal heart rate of 60 bpm or below can indicate a heart block. Prior to approximately 28 weeks gestation, tachycardia is a natural consequence of the immaturity of the fetal nervous system.
