Discuss how you can help emotionally reluctant clients to express themselves.

What will be an ideal response?

?Provide a safe, secure, welcoming environment for the expression of feeling, and make accurate feelings reflections to assist the process of learning the language of feelings.
?You serve a containing function for the feelings your client expresses. That is, by accurately understanding and responding to a client’s internal world, you help the client to safely manage, to contain, his thoughts and feelings so that he doesn’t have to fear being overwhelmed by them.
?This safety you provide makes it possible for more feelings to be shared by the client.
While you may try specific experiments or techniques to help people access feelings
(e.g., expressive arts or Gestalt techniques), it is primarily through the trusting relationship with you, and particularly in your receptivity to feelings expression, that most of the action really occurs.
?You are like a midwife to the birth of these feelings, and you can express your support, respect, and gratitude when your client shares such an experience with you. Your comfort with your own feelings is key to your receptivity and openness to the feelings of others.
