Why is seed dormancy an important plant adaptation?

What will be an ideal response?

Dormancy allows seeds to remain inactive until desirable growing conditions occur. For example seeds may be dormant during dry periods and germinate when enough moisture is present. Many seeds do not germinate until after they have been exposed to a cold period (mimics winter).
