A friend of yours mistakenly thinks that an antisocial personality disorder refers to a shy person. Explain to your friend why he or she is wrong. Discuss the true characteristics of an antisocial personality disorder, and explain what personality disorder a "shy person" is more likely to have

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will include that persons with antisocial personality disorder are sometimes called sociopaths or psychopaths and that on first appearance they are superficially charming, using this first impression to "use" people. Their "friends" only gradually become aware of the sociopath's lying and self-serving manipulation. Many are delinquents or criminals who may be a threat to the general public. They tend to have a long history of conflict with society. A person with an antisocial personality disorder lacks a conscience. Such people are impulsive, selfish, dishonest, emotionally shallow, and manipulative. They are poorly socialized and seem to be incapable of feeling guilt, shame, fear, loyalty, or love. One study found that psychopaths are "blind" to signs of disgust in others. This may add to their capacity for cruelty and their ability to use others. On the other hand, an avoidant personality disorder is timid and uncomfortable in social situations, and fears evaluation.
